Wake Up and Smell the Success: How Odours Affect Property Sales

28 Jan

Strong odours can severely impact your chances of selling your home.

Whether you’re having an open house, an auction, or inspections by appointment – it important that you take a few simple steps to make sure your house is smelling good!

Commonly Disliked Odours

  • Cigarettes
  • Strong food smells
  • Lingering pet scents
  • Pet food, litter etc.
  • Baby nappy odours
  • Musty or stuffy smells
  • Water damage and mould
  • Overpowering chemical cleaning agents

Remember – when you live in a home, it can be hard to identify a smell because the human body quickly adjusts.  It’s a good idea to ask a close friend if he/she thinks your property has any odours that need to be sorted out.

How to Make Your Home Smell as Fresh as Daisies

1.       Open doors and windows as much as possible to allow air to circulate.

2.       Check your vents in case filters need to be cleaned or replaced.

3.       Get carpets and upholstery professionally cleaned, especially if you have pets or smokers in the home. Some cases may even call for the walls to be washed and repainted.

4.       During the sales campaign, have your pets stay with a friend or in a kennel. Even if they are outdoor pets, not everyone is a cat or dog person, and you don’t want to put off a prospective buyer.

5.       Do your cleaning at least a day in advance of any inspections, and remember to let the house air out afterward.

6.       As a finishing touch, a subtle incense or essential oil fragrance can be nice, as can the smell of home brewed coffee, or freshly baked bread!
